GP Registration in Australia: First Steps for Overseas-Trained Doctors

If you’re an overseas-trained doctor looking to work in Australia, starting your registration process early is crucial, even before securing a job offer. The process ensures your medical qualifications are verified and prepares you for training or practice pathways like the RACGP PEP Specialist Pathway or ACRRM Specialist Pathway.


Step 1: ECFMG-EPIC Primary Source Verification

The first step in your Australian registration journey is to verify your medical credentials through ECFMG-EPIC. This process provides an EPIC number that the Australian Medical Council (AMC) will use to access your verified qualifications.

Objective: Verify medical credentials and receive an EPIC number for AMC.Timeframe: 4–6 weeks from submission


Steps:

  1. Create an Electronic Portfolio of International Credentials (EPIC) account.

  2. Complete the EPIC ID Form (IEF) online.

  3. Certify the form via download or NotaryCam.

  4. Upload required credentials, including:

    • Primary medical degree

    • Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT)

    • Internship and Postgraduate Specialist Medical Qualification

  5. Nominate the AMC to access your portfolio.

  6. Make the payment and select qualifications for verification via the My Reports tab.


Required Documents:

  • Full-colour passport photo

  • Scanned biodata page of your passport

  • Medical education details (school ID, attendance, degree issue dates)

  • Medical licensure information

  • EICS / ECFMG number (if applicable)


Step 2: Australian Medical Council (AMC) Portfolio

Once your EPIC verification is complete, create your AMC Portfolio. The AMC will request your ECFMG results and list them in your portfolio.

Objective: Primary source verification of medical credentialsTimeframe: 4–6 weeks

Required Before You Start:

  • Passport photo (full colour)

  • Scanned biodata page of passport

  • Digital signature

  • EPIC number

  • Specialist College qualifications (names and dates)


Step 3: Comparability Assessment

The final step involves applying for the comparability assessment, which determines your eligibility to work in Australian general practice. Applications are made directly to either:
