What Actually Matters Beyond the Postcode?

For many overseas-trained GPs and newly fellowed FRACGPs, the search for a metro Distribution Priority Area (DPA) role starts with a single question: which suburbs actually qualify? It's a reasonable place to start — DPA status determines whether you can access a Medicare provider number without waiting out a 10-year moratorium, so it's a genuine gatekeeper. But treating "is it DPA?" as the only question to ask is where a lot of doctors get it wrong. A DPA tag tells you almost nothing about whether you, your family, and your career will actually thrive there for the next five, ten or twenty years.

We've spent years doing exactly this kind of due diligence at scale — mapping DPA metro suburbs across every state and territory, based on live GP vacancy data and the government's own Distribution Priority Area. The result is a breakdown of 24 DPA regions and 76 individual suburbs nationwide, from Perth's northern growth corridor to the Mornington Peninsula, from Western Sydney to Ipswich. We'll be publishing a guide to each region and each suburb over the coming months. But before you dive into that detail, it's worth understanding the factors that should actually drive your decision — because the suburb that's "technically DPA" and the suburb that's genuinely right for you are not always the same thing.

Distance to the CBD isn't the same as your actual commute

A suburb 30km from the city sounds close on paper. Whether that translates to a 25-minute train ride or an hour and a half of peak-hour traffic depends entirely on what's actually there — train lines, freeway access, and how well the area is served by public transport. Two suburbs at an identical straight-line distance from the CBD can have wildly different daily realities. Always check the actual commute, not just the number of kilometres.

Is there a genuine GP shortage, or just a DPA tag?

DPA status reflects a formula based on population, existing GP numbers and billing data — but the strength of demand still varies. Some DPA suburbs have a handful of overstretched practices and a visibly under-serviced population; others are DPA by a much narrower margin. If procedural work interests you, a genuine shortage of specialists in the area can actually work in your favour, giving you room to build a broader scope of practice.

Cost of living and housing — rent vs. buy

This deserves its own line, separate from general "livability." Housing affordability varies enormously between DPA suburbs even at a similar distance from the CBD — outer-metro growth corridors in Perth or Melbourne's west, for instance, can offer significantly cheaper housing than established suburbs the same distance out on the other side of the same city. If you're planning to buy rather than rent, this is worth modelling properly rather than assuming "outer suburb" means "cheap" across the board.

Accessibility

The healthcare support network around you

Look at what hospitals and specialists are nearby for referrals — but also consider what's missing. A lack of specialists in procedural areas like skin, women's health or minor surgery isn't automatically a downside; for a GP looking to build a sub-specialty interest, being one of the only providers in the area can be a genuine career advantage.

Schools, universities and family fit

For GPs relocating with a family, school quality and choice matter as much as anything on this list — as does access to universities if older children are approaching that stage. Community and multicultural mix matters too, particularly for overseas-trained doctors settling into a new country.

Spouse and partner opportunities

This one is easy to overlook when you're focused on your own job offer, but it shouldn't be. If your partner is also looking for work, the depth of the local job market in their field can make or break how sustainable the move feels after the first year.

Direct flights home

For doctors who've relocated from overseas, proximity to an airport with direct or easy-connection flights back to family is a genuine quality-of-life factor, not a minor convenience. A suburb an hour from a major international airport is a very different proposition to one four hours from the nearest one.

DPA status durability — the factor most people miss

This is the one we'd flag hardest. DPA status isn't fixed forever, and it isn't uniform across a metro area. Inner-metro (MM1) locations are automatically excluded from DPA status under the current rules — no inner-city suburb qualifies, regardless of local demand. Outer-metro DPA status, by contrast, is reviewed and can shift from year to year based on updated population and workforce data. If you're relying on a DPA classification to satisfy a moratorium requirement or secure a provider number over several years, it's worth understanding that the ground can move under your feet in a way it can't for a genuinely regional MM2+ location. This doesn't mean outer-metro DPA roles are risky — most classifications are reasonably stable — but it's a factor worth checking rather than assuming.
