Perth - Southern Corridor (Rockingham-Kwinana)
If you’re a fellowed or newly fellowed GP considering a metro DPA location with coastal lifestyle and strong long-term demand, Perth’s Southern Corridor around Rockingham and Kwinana is one of the most compelling options south of the city. Roughly 40 minutes from the Perth CBD via the Kwinana Freeway and Mandurah Line, this region combines beachside living, family-oriented growth suburbs and major employment drivers that continue to draw new residents.
The City of Rockingham is among Western Australia’s fastest-growing local government areas, with a population of around 154,000 in recent estimates and forecasts of approximately 164,000 by 2026, rising toward 200,000-plus by the mid-2030s and close to 240,000 by 2046. Growth is especially strong in Baldivis and other expanding estates east of the freeway, while Rockingham itself remains the coastal service and lifestyle hub. Nearby Kwinana adds a substantial industrial and working-population catchment. That combination of young families, defence and industrial employment, and ongoing residential development is why many local catchments remain attractive DPA locations: patient numbers keep rising faster than GP supply.
Housing is generally more attainable than inner Perth or premium northern coastal suburbs, which continues to attract first-home buyers and relocating families. Transport is a clear strength. The Mandurah Line provides direct rail services from Rockingham and nearby stations into the CBD, while the Kwinana Freeway supports reliable road commuting. Everyday travel within the corridor is straightforward, with local buses feeding the stations and major roads linking residential areas to shopping, schools and work precincts.
Education options are well established across Rockingham, Baldivis and Kwinana, with numerous primary and secondary schools serving a large school-age population. Health infrastructure includes Rockingham General Hospital — a significant local facility with emergency, surgical, paediatric, obstetric and other services — reducing the need to travel into central Perth for many referrals.
Lifestyle is the region’s standout. Rockingham offers beaches, a foreshore precinct, cafés and a more relaxed coastal atmosphere, while Baldivis provides modern family estates, parks and newer amenities. Kwinana and surrounding industrial areas (including the broader Western Trade Coast, defence-related activity around HMAS Stirling and future infrastructure such as Westport) underpin local jobs and a diverse patient mix.
